Free Plan Reality Test: Which AI Tools Actually Have Usable Free Plans?

Key findings

Free plan claims are not the same as usable workflows.

Evidence Batch 2 tested whether free-plan access could complete a beginner AI Pay lead magnet opt-in workflow. The early result: free plans can be useful, but access gates, trial banners, subscriber requirements, and feature limits matter as much as the $0 price tag.

Gemini completed the workflow

Gemini accepted the prompt and generated the lead magnet opt-in workflow in a clean browser session. Extra features still prompted sign-in, so the verdict is usable with limits.

ChatGPT worked in a human session

ChatGPT’s official free plan exists, but the clean-browser test hit Cloudflare verification. Damon’s normal browser session completed the workflow, so the verdict is usable with login/session.

Kit reached publish setup

Kit let a human session create and save an AI Pay Checklist Test broadcast and reach the publish/test-send step, but a 14-day trial banner and no-subscriber limitation were visible.

Evidence batch 2

Manual free-plan access test

These tests used a clean browser session and the same beginner workflow prompt. A blocked result means the free plan may still be real, but the workflow was not completed in this test environment.

ChatGPT

Usable With Limits

Workflow tested

Create a simple AI Pay lead magnet opt-in workflow for a beginner affiliate marketer.

Access: Official pricing page confirmed a $0 Free plan. Clean automated browser access hit Cloudflare human verification, but a normal human browser session was already verified/logged in and reached the usable ChatGPT interface.

Workflow: Human-session test completed the prompt and produced an AI Pay lead magnet opt-in workflow with landing page/form guidance, follow-up email path, and CTA logic.

Blocks: Clean-browser automation was blocked by Cloudflare verification. Human browser session completed the workflow. This means ChatGPT is usable for the workflow when a user can pass normal access/login requirements.

Upgrade pressure: Low during the captured workflow: no paywall blocked the visible output. Paid tiers remain visible on pricing page for expanded access.

Usable with login/session. Clean-browser test was blocked, but human-session evidence confirms the free ChatGPT experience can complete the beginner text workflow.

Gemini

Usable With Limits

Workflow tested

Create a simple AI Pay lead magnet opt-in workflow for a beginner affiliate marketer.

Access: Official subscription page confirmed a $0 Free plan. Clean browser access reached the Gemini app and accepted a prompt without requiring paid checkout.

Workflow: Gemini generated a full lead magnet opt-in workflow response from the test prompt.

Blocks: A sign-in banner appeared for additional features such as image creation and Google app integration, but the core text workflow completed.

Upgrade pressure: Low to medium: sign-in/additional-feature prompts were visible, but did not block the text workflow.

Usable with limits for the tested beginner text workflow. Next test should check saved history, export/copy reliability, and whether limits change after repeated prompts.

Kit

Usable With Limits

Workflow tested

Create and publish a simple AI Pay lead magnet opt-in workflow with a landing page/form and follow-up path.

Access: Official pricing page confirmed a $0 Free plan with landing pages/forms. Clean automated browser signup was blocked by Cloudflare, but a normal human browser session reached the Kit dashboard and editor.

Workflow: Human-session test created an AI Pay Checklist Test broadcast draft, entered lead magnet opt-in copy, saved it, and reached the Publish Broadcast step with test-send/add-subscriber options.

Blocks: A 14-day free trial banner was visible. Publish/send step showed no subscribers added yet, so sending to an audience requires adding subscribers or sending a test email first.

Upgrade pressure: Medium: persistent top banner says 14 days left on free trial and prompts Upgrade now, but the broadcast draft workflow was not blocked before publish setup.

Usable with limits. Kit can create a basic lead magnet broadcast workflow in a human session, but audience sending requires subscribers and the visible trial banner means the exact long-term free-plan state needs follow-up after trial expiration.

Evidence batch 1

Official-source free-plan evidence

These rows are not full account tests yet. They are the first evidence layer: official pricing/subscription pages checked on September 21, 2026, with limits and workflow tests queued for screenshots.

ChatGPT

Strong signal

Official source →

Claim: Official pricing page states the free version of ChatGPT is available to everyone.

Observed limits: Official source confirms free access, while paid Go, Plus, Business, and Enterprise plans expand access. Exact current usage limits require account-level testing.

Workflow to test next: Ask ChatGPT to create a beginner affiliate landing-page outline and export/copy the result without upgrading.

Strong free-plan candidate for text workflows; manual test still needed for current limits and upgrade pressure.

Gemini

Strong signal

Official source →

Claim: Official Gemini subscriptions page lists a Free plan at $0/month with a Google Account.

Observed limits: Free plan includes Gemini app access, image generation/editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, Flow access, Gemini Notebook, and 15 GB cloud storage; paid plans raise usage limits.

Workflow to test next: Use Gemini to research a simple AI-tool comparison and produce a publishable summary without upgrading.

Strong free-plan candidate with broad feature access; manual test needed for practical limits and output quality.

Kit

Strong signal

Official source →

Claim: Official pricing page lists Free at $0/month with up to 10,000 subscribers and unlimited landing pages/forms.

Observed limits: Free includes one user and core list-building features; automations and some monetization/advanced features are gated to paid plans.

Workflow to test next: Create a simple opt-in landing page and embedded email form for an AI Pay lead magnet without upgrading.

Strong free-plan candidate for list building; manual test needed for branding, automation, and publishing friction.

HeyGen

Medium signal

Official source →

Claim: Official pricing FAQ says HeyGen can be used for free with up to 3 videos per month and no credit card required.

Observed limits: Free plan has monthly video limits and limited trial access to premium features; paid Creator, Pro, and Business plans expand credits and features.

Workflow to test next: Create one short avatar/product explainer video and check watermark, export, duration, and credit limits.

Promising but quota-limited free-plan candidate; manual video export test is required before calling it usable.

OpusClip

Medium signal

Official source →

Claim: Official pricing page lists Free at $0 and shows free-plan AI clipping, captions, and export limitations.

Observed limits: Free plan includes regular processing speed, limited import/export conditions, watermark/caption/template limits, 1080p rendered clips, and media expiry details shown in pricing comparison.

Workflow to test next: Upload or import one video, generate shorts, export an MP4, and record watermark, duration, storage, and quality limits.

Useful free-plan candidate for testing, but export and watermark limits must be manually checked before ranking it highly.

Hypothesis

AI tools often advertise free access, but a useful free plan should be distinguishable from a trial, demo, waitlist, or heavily limited teaser.

Methodology

  • Start with published AI Pay Checklist tool records that have free-plan and pricing fields.
  • Separate confirmed free-plan signals from unknown, paid-only, or unclear pricing records.
  • Flag beginner-friendly tools because a free plan is less useful if a beginner cannot realistically use it.
  • Do not claim a free plan is usable until manual testing confirms account access, core feature access, export/use limits, and practical output quality.
  • Record screenshots, source URLs, test date, tester notes, and whether the free plan can complete a real beginner workflow.
